Since we’re fans of steampunk, we were thrilled to get our hands on this Bee Haven Home Vintage Watchman’s Clock. This is a wonderful vintage Watchman’s clock from the 1950s and possesses great steampunk style, having become an integral part of industrial history.
Basically, watchmen clocks were telltale clocks where a single clock contained the apparatus for recording several visiting station times. This particular one was worn by the night guard/watchman in prisons and factories. They’d have keys located at different stations throughout the factory. Hence, inserting the key would record the location and time, serving as proof that he’d not taken a nap but made his rounds!
This metal clock was made by Lanthem in Atlanta, Georgia, and sits in a grand leather case. Despite the leather shoulder strap being missing, the clock is in good vintage condition, so it made for a wonderful decorative piece in our sunroom.

We’re venturing into slightly antique territory with The Cozy Bungalow Shop Antique Ingraham Hand Painted Wood Clock. Dating back to the 19th century, this breathtaking antique wooden clock has aged beautifully and has a few lovely worn bits but still retains its original integrity. This clock features Roman Numerals on a circular display, with the clock’s face itself being square in shape. What’s more, we could still see the delicate forest green and coral handpainted floral motifs in the corners. Since our kitchen has cottage and farmhouse decor, it went perfectly there.
But that’s not all. The interesting bit is that there’s something handwritten at the bottom lower right. It’s written by pencil in very old cursive back in the 1800s and reads something like “Leyman Ingraham, June 26, 1881, Lake, NY.” How mysterious!

Did you know that there’s a difference between vintage and antique? A rug is considered vintage when it’s less than a century old. If its age is more than a century, then it’s considered an antique.
Material and make
When buying antique rugs, one needs to make sure that they’re made from a natural material such as silk, cotton, or wool, as these materials will stand the test of time. Additionally, we needed to ensure that the carpet hadn’t been made by a machine but was rather handmade. So, we asked the dealer to see the back of the carpet. Basically, when one flips the rug, it should look almost the same as the front. That’s the quickest and easiest way to tell that the rug is handmade.
Edges and ends
One of the first places where the rug wears out is the edges and the ends. The unraveling of the fringes isn’t a major issue as one can often rebind them. However, if the edges and ends of the rug are neglected, then certain dealers, in a bid to try and repair the rug, unravel them, trying to refringe the whole rug. Buying a rug cut back via this technique isn’t good.
Colors and patina
The colors employed in vintage rugs are what make them attractive. Usually, vintage rugs feature natural dyes, which is what makes them unique and desirable. They mellow beautifully as time goes by, a process that new rugs cannot copy. So, avoid rugs with faded areas. Also, just like fine antiques, vintage rugs develop a patina, which lends the rug a lovely sheen and even a silky look.
Listen to the rug
Now this might sound strange, but listening to the rug goes a long way in determining its vintage nature. If the rug has been dried without using the proper technique, it feels like cardboard, and one will definitely hear it crack. Hence, it’s not worth the investment. To test the same, fold the rug and bend it. If you don’t hear a crack, then it’s a good thing.
Artificial aging
Finally, you need to avoid rugs that people have aged artificially. Some rug merchants age rugs by piling them and sometimes treating them with harsh chemicals to tone their colors down. Such rugs have no inherent value, and it’s best to avoid them.
